Inking: Lena Dunham unveiled her new sick tattoo on Instagram on Wednesday, seemingly in homage to her battle with endometriosis.
She has battled endometriosis, undergone a hysterectomy, and suffered the heartbreak of ending a long-term relationship.
And Lena Dunham unveiled her latest tattoo on Instagram on Wednesday, seemingly in homage to the chronic illness.
The actress, 32, showed off her inking of the word 'sick' written in the font of rope on her neck, saying it is what she is 'most scared of being called'.
She captioned the post: 'Sometimes the thing you’re most scared of being called is the best thing you can call yourself. thank you @havenstudiobk for labeling me... and to my sisters in this dizzying but starry slog- i am lasso’d to you!
At the age of 31, Lena made the decision to have a hysterectomy, writing for Vogue the 'unbearable' pain had made her 'delirious'.
Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the womb starts to grow in other places, such as the ovaries and fallopian tubes.
Her ninth surgery to deal with her condition meant she would never be able to have children.
Lena also spoken openly about her mental health issues, and was candid about her heartbreak after she and her boyfriend Jack Antanoff split after five years together in late 2017.
'I can’t lie and say that the last couple years have been easy. It's been a time of... and some of that has been, you know, because of my own behavior. I’ve grown up, and I’ve developed in the spotlight, for better or worse,' she said.
'And I've also dealt with the challenge of my own body turning against me.
'It's been a time of tremendous loss and tremendous change, and I've always thought when people said, you know, with loss comes a lot of gain and a lot of power, I've always thought that was BS, but its turned out it's true.'
Dunham has also publicly described her issues not just with body positivity but also with anxiety after being diagnosed with obsessive compulsive disorder.
Last Thursday, the Big Apple native posted a video to her Instagram in which she said a final goodbye to her scale.
'Ya, this is a breakup' she said in the short social media clip which took the form of a Dear John.
'I can't do this anymore. I don't have feelings for you anymore,' she went on, speaking directly into her phone camera.
'I don't love you anymore and I've tried ... I've tried to do it different ways,' she said. 'I've tried to, like, bring the excitement back but we're done so ... bye.'
Dunham then ceremoniously opened her white waste bin and planted the glass scale in the trash bag.
